The farmers that normally work the field have been disrupted. Rats. Not mall rats, but field rats, larger and rougher looking than the mall variety, but entirely new to the area. There are about ten of them, and they seem to have commandeered one of the shacks.

One of the Prometheans meets the group as it arrives, gesturing at it, "They come out once in a while and eat whatever's close by. They haven't hurt anyone, but we've never had quite this issue before."

Makena giggles, "I just keep thinking of The Princess Bride hehe" looking over towards the shack. "Hehe, how long have they been in there?"

Placing a hand on her hip, the strangely marked demoness looks over the refuges, her other hands fingers tapping her plump lips in thought. "Well now, rats, huh? What do we usualy do? Feed them and they simply run off into the night again?"

Shadina shrugs. "Well, if they're like us, we should be able to enlighten them."

A silver lion, dressed in semi-formal attire and a popular model of shotgun securely strapped to his back, arrives upon the scene with a proud smile. "Hmmm," he murmurs under his breath, waving to the other agents, "This isn't the firs time the farms have been under duress. If you haven't had this issue before, is it possible that you've been growing something new to attract these rats?"

"Well," says the Promethean, a male equine that adjusts his glowing fedora, "Normally the mutants in the area try a more violent raid. These just walked in and set up shop. They haven't actually hurt anyone, and our doctrines are clear. If they have not harmed up, we shouldn't harm them, but they are in the way, and we don't know them. They could become violent later." He lifts his shoulders, "As for new, we did get a few pigs in, but they don't seem to be bothering the pigs."

Makena giggles, "Do you know where they might have come from? Anybody tried to track them back to a source?"

Winter hmms softly, her eyes drawn to the makeshift shack the rats have occupied "Good question. Do they, infact, talk? Or are they, you know.." her voice trails off and she makes a vague spinning gesture with her finger next to her head.

Shadina adjusts her pack of research equipment. "Well, it sounds like diplomacy is the proper way to start. We could send in a representative to make contact with them."

"If they haven't hurt anyone, I suppose it's possible that they're just hungry." Dio puts a paw to his chin, listening in on the other agents' ideas. "While I can understand why you wouldn't want to hurt them, leaving them alone could do quite a large amount of damage. As this ladies here said," he says, geasturing towards Shadina and Winter, "Perhaps we could try talking to them, if possible."

"They only just showed up last night," reports the Promethean, "We don't plan to just leave them laying about. That's where you come in. If you can make contact, that'd be just great. I mean, it's not like we're opposed to new members of the city, if they're so inclined." He moves out of the way, making a clear path to the shack, where two rats are sitting up against it, relaxing and watching the group.

Makena giggles, "I can go try to talk to em! They might be nice!"

Winter's lips draws up into a slight sneer "They are still.. rats." she glances around and sighs slightly "And yes yes, I know. Equality and all of that. Stop giving me that dirty look. I just never liked rats is all. But you're right. What if they refuse though? We switch to shotgun diplomacy?" she asks, waving a clawed hand towards the cat with his shotgun.

The panthress squares her shoulders, standing up more proudly. "I'd be willing to volunteer to talk to them, and hopefully, harsher methods won't be necessary, but I assume, between the lot of us, we can handle them, if need be."

"As long as they're willing to be diplomatic, then I'd certainly agree with them being around. Perhaps we could even convince them to work on the farm. However..." Dio taps a claw upon his strapped shotgun, "The alternative is there in case things go sour," he chuckles, nodding towards Winter. "I'll give it a shot. I'm used to taking a few blows." Straightening out his suit, Dio walks towards the shack and gives the rats a friendly smile and wave. "Hello there," he says with the smoothest voice possible, "May I speak with you?"

"Que?" speaks the rat on the left, looking up towards Dio a moment, "Hola hombre, cmo puedo ayudarle?" Ah, Mexican rats? The one at his side moves over to nudge him lightly.

Crossing her arms beneath her breasts, the tall demoness tries to strike an imposing figure as she steps up to stand quietly by the felines right. One clawed digit idly tapping her arm. She raises an eyebrow at the strange language being spoken, glancing sideways at her companions to see if anyone might understand it.

Makena will start up along the path to the shack, with a big expressive smile from her muzzle to her big yellow eyes. She'll wave to show empty hands "hola! hehe. hablo ingles, senior??"

"Oh my," Dio exclaims, rubbing lightly at his head. "I'm afraid the only Spanish I know goes as far as 'hola' and 'Que'." A quick laugh from the lion as he looks towards the others, hoping for a way out of this awkward situation. "Oh?" He murmurs, looking towards Makena and taking a few steps back to give her the center of attention.

Shadina facepalms at Makena's murder of the Spanish language, and since everyone else seems to do it, slips up closer to the rest of the group as they approach the rats, but mostly hangs back for the moment.

The rat pushes up to his feet as Makena approaches. Her smile seems to draw a smile in term, "Hola Chica," he calls in the universal tone of flirting, "Quieres ver mi cama? Parece que podra ser muy divertido." The rat on the ground stays there, looking amused at its kin's antics.

Winter tilts her horned head to the side and purses her lips in thought before uttering under her breath "Okay, I didn't understand a word of that. Just let me know if I should start with the violence, yeah?"

Makena giggles, luckily she gets this sort of question a lot at the bars, she even knows something diplomatic to say! "Que lastima... no soy soltera!" With that she pats Dio on the shoulder and smiles. "E tu?"

Still quite unaware as to what the rats were saying, Dio simply shrugs and listens to the apparently Spanish speaking agents attempt diplomacy. "Hmm," he murmurs, rotating his head to look at Makena and then back at the rats with a smiling expression.

"That's unfortunate, but that's ok. What do you and your friends want?" asks the rat, "I'm Tony, this is Mike," he adds, gesturing at himself, then down at his friend, "The rest are inside. You with those other guys?"

Shadina listens in. It seems hte hyena girl is handling things relatively well. She remains quiet for the moment, waiting to see how things go.

Makena giggles, keeping with the spanish though her's isn't quite so nice, "My name is Makena! Which other guys? Have the other guys been bad luck for you?"

Makena looks back behind her, "Them?"

The rat waves out at the Promethean watching in the short distance, "The chico with the crazy glowing hat. What's he want anyway? Him and his glow hat friends have been staring at us all day."

The door to the shack suddenly opens, and a female rat steps out, slender and even taller than the two males, "Boy, you best not be making trouble," she almost roars. Tony cringes, wilting on himself, while Mike just feigns napping.

Winter cranes her neck a bit as the door opens, trying to peek inside to gauge exactly how many rats might be in there. "Think they understand us?" she asks in english.

Dio listens to the conversation, looking at the shack with increased interest. "Do you think they would let us in there," the lion says, pointing towards the shack with a large paw. "Ah," he sighs, looking towards the now opened door. "Maybe you should ask what's making them so angry and why they're here ma'am," he syas, looking towards Makena.

Makena smiles at the female rat, "Hello, ma'am! Tony and Mike were just introducing themselves. My name is Makena. How are you?"

Shadina leans closer to Makena. In English, she speaks to her. "Need any back-up, or do you have this? I can talk to them, too, if you prefer."

The inside of the shack is briefly visible before the angry she-rat slaps the door shut with her tail. There appears to be about five or so other rats within, crowded around a table. Playing cards perhaps? Or talking? eating? Hard to tell. The new female pauses when Makena speaks, looking her up and down sizing her up, "Ola Makena. So how many times has he tried to get into your pants so far?" she asks, glancing towards Tony, who starts to stammer excuses, "Just as I thought." She reaches and grabs a large rat ear, tugging Tony closer, "You're the worst boyfriend I ever had, you lousy good for nothing."

Winter shifts her weight to her other foot and grins amusedly at the scene playing out "Ooooh, he's in trouble now. Is that his mother?"

"Interesting," Dio whispers under his breath, looking through the door before it closes. "Seems like a mostly harmless bunch from what I've gathered." The lion looks towards the female rate, giving her a friendly wave and a smile. "This may be a long shot, but do you happen to understand or speak English? We'd like to know why you lovely people are here if possible."

Makena giggles, "It is my bad luck that I'm taken, but his good luck to have such a lovely woman! He's the winner, but there is not winning much for us." winking playfully with a grin

Shadina sighs and looks to the female rat, and addresses her in Spanish. "Pardon us. Who is in charge here? May we speak to them?"

"Si?" asks the she rat, then in English, "Yes? I speak a little the English." She tugs Tony down, forcing him to a knee at her side as she lapses back to Spanish, "We don't have a leader like that. I'm Rosetta. You met Tony and Mike." Tug, "What can I do for you?" Tony looks appropriately miserable, but makes no attempt to escape the iron vice grip of his angry girlfriend.

Winter looks over towards the panther girl "What did she say? Will they move?" she asks, her eyes darting from the feline to the two rats "Did you ask them why they set up shop here?"

Makena smiles, giggling a bit, "I will try to speak Spanish as much as I can. The man in the yellow hat is a Promethian. The Promethians all live around here. It is their village. They did not know how to talk to you. They hope you are nice people. They are nice people."

Makena giggles, "They are just shy."

"So there's no leader or anything? I suppose they are just a family who happened to move in." Dio looks back towards the others and shrugs before returning his vision back to the rats. "While you haven't caused any harm, the workers here have grown somewhat concerned of your sudden presence. I assume you and your friends moved here for some quick food? Sorry for speaking in a non-native tongue for you, but," the lion looks back to Makina and Sadina.

The rat stares at Dio a moment, mouthing some of the words with a frown, "Have you go to Mexico? It is terrible. We ran," she says in English, "You have nice place here. We can stay? Don't mind we are rats?" She looks towards Makena, speaking in Spanish, "This is the first city we saw in days."

Shadina looks a bit frustrated with everyone talking at once. She decides to wait for Rosalita's answer to Makena, and in the meantime, replies to Winter, in English, in a somewhat hushed tone. "The conversation is just getting started. Hold your horses."

Makena giggles, "Let me talk to the man in the yellow hat. One moment, please." as she waves, walking back over towards the Promethian. Once she gets back, she asks in English, "Usted... er... Sir, hehe, what could the rat family do to live here?"

Winter looks a bit suprised, picking up on a word or two "Mexico? Did they just say they came all the way from Mexico? That's pretty impressive" the demoness says, relaxing her stance a bit seeing as they don't exactly seem to be threatning.

"Oh? I'm afraid I'm not current on the events involving Mexico. However, I'll believe what you say considering you seem like nice people." Dio pauses for a moment, listening to the other agents speak for a while. "I'm sure the Promethean wouldn't mind you staying here if you helped with the farm."

Shadina addresses the rat in Spanish. "The workers need to get to this place, but you can go to the village over there. It is for people like us."

At last, Tony's ear is released, and he slumps back with Mike, rubbing the abused thing quietly. The promethean looks to Makena when she approaches, "They want to join New Dawn? That's fantastic news. Are they speaking Spanish? Couldn't be French. I took years of French," he sighs and laughs at once.

Rosetta bobs her head once at Shadina, "Alright," she says, then she moves back to the shack, banging on the door twice and shouting in Spanish, "Everyone out!" She says she's not the leader, but the other rats are out in short order. All look shorter than her. One of them is, startingly, young and small looking, and sick as well. The little young male rat moves to cling to Rosetta's leg, leaning against her and looking tired and ill.

Makena nods, "Hehe, they came from Mexico! They said that this is the first city that they found. It was very dangerous in Mexico, apparently! They sound like they are looking for a safe place to raise a family, and they like it here a lot. Rosetta, the woman, she speaks a little English."

Dio laughs, watching the female rat take charge with impressive efficiency. "It would seem like they're an eager bunch," he smiles, looking towards the Promethean. "I'm sure we could easily work out a deal. And perhaps," Dio pauses for a moment and gestures towards the smaller looking rat, "Perhaps we should have someone medically inclined to look at these ones? If all else, I'm sure they'd enjoy a nice meal."

Winter nods "Yeah, the doc should definetly take a look at that one" the demoness says, extending a clawed finger to point at the sickly boy "Just make sure to keep an eye on them. Might be a trick, yeah?" she pauses a bit before continuing "I mean it's not likely, but I've seen stranger things.."

Shadina nods. "We should take them to Doctor Ed." She turns to where Makena is talking to the farmer. "Hey, hyena girl! We're headed back to the village!" She turns back to the rat and her troop. In Spanish she tells them. "We go." and begins leading the way back to the village hospital.

"That's a long hike," agrees the horse Prommie, "We'll get them housed and fed then. I'm sure we have a few people that can speak with them, help then settle in." He looks at the smallest curiously, "Is that a child? I haven't seen one that wasn't still wet from its mother since P day. He doesn't look like he's growing up like the others." Confusion is clear on the prommie's face, but he's moving to make arrangements.

Makena giggles, "Must be something bad about to happen down south, though! Rats are always the first ones off the sinking ship!" she looks to Rosetta and the others and smiles, nodding, "Okay! hehe"

As if noticing the attention towards her ward, Rosetta sets an arm protectively around the boy, "This is little Paulo. He became sick when we turned into rats along the way here," she explains in Spanish, "It was strange for all of us, but he's been sick ever since."

"That is awfully strange," Dio nods, looking back towards the rat child. "From the few live births I've seen in our town, children tend to grow up quite quick into maturity within hours." The lion analyzes the child's form, comparing it to the rats around them. "Considering they look like the same infection, I'd say it's highly probable that he might be an actual child. This may warrant further study."

Winter seductively beckon, "Shouldn't he just have.. blown through puberty in around a day though?"

Makena giggles, "Well maybe he was born before they got affected? I've never heard of it but maybe?"

Shadina sighs. "I can try to give him a look over, but I'm not looking to steal Dr. Ed's thunder. It may be a case of nanite rejection, or he may need serious amounts of nourishment."

"Yes," says Rosetta in English, "He is eleven years old." She suddenly plucks him from the ground, supporting him as she advances forward, lapsing to Spanish, "Show me to this doctor." The other rats trail behind, but not without looking around at people and things. One friendly rat thrusts his hand out at anyone that looks like they'll take it, shaking enthusiastically and introducing themselves as Pedro.

Winter takes a small step back from the mother and her child "I'm not so sure about this. I mean yeah, the kid is sickly looking, that's for sure. I'd have thought the nanites would just mature him. But maybe it's something contagious. I'd rather get the doc over here then take him straight into the village, yeah?" the imposing looking demoness says as she clearly looks a bit wary, even scared of the kid.

"Yes, I'm not sure how well an actual child will be able to live in an environment such as this." Dio crouches down, smiling as he takes Pedro's hand within his paw and gives it a few shakes before releasing. "I suppose we should escort them to this doctor and perhaps get a nanite researcher to come about as we plan arrangements for this family's stay."

"What is she saying," asks Rosetta, looking at Winter with some confusion as her mastery of English is put to the test, "He is not catchy, or we would all be sick, and we are not sick," she defies with an angry swish of her tail agitatedly.

Shadina rolls her eyes at Winter. "If he were contagious, the rest of them would likely be as bad off as him by now. Still, it may not be a bad idea to keep him here and not move him much until we have an idea of what's wrong." She stops and approaches the mother and child, switching to Spanish. "Let me look at him. I know medicine."

Makena looks to Rosetta, "We have never met a child who was transformed after P-day and was still a child. When we have children, they grow up extremely fast now. We were worried about him being sick, and trying to think of what we could do to help."

Winter harrumphs "I'm just looking out for our village. Sure, the adults may be fine but it could just as well affect anyone who is currently pregnant or the likes." she crosses her chitin-covered arms again "I'm not saying we shouldn't help him or anything. Just be careful."

Rosetta looks quite wary indeed, ears flat on her head, but slowly she crouches down and sets Paulo out flat, rubbing his belly and urging him to be still so the 'nice doctor' can help.

"Don't worry ma'am," Dio says, looking at Rosetta's increasing concern. "Our friend here is only here to help your child. Once this is over with, we'll figure out what's wrong and work out a nice place for your family to stay."

Shadina takes a look over little Paulo to try to make a proper diagnosis. She uses some of her equipment to scan his nanites and get a look at how his physiology is responding.

Winter stands back but watches with interest, stretching her large wings out behind her for a moment before folding them back in place "Want me to fly over and fetch the doc?"

Makena tries to entertain Paulo, getting out her little fox hand-puppet and making it talk all silly-like

Paulo appears to be whole, but indeed ill. It's quite difficult to get a grasp on it at first. It seems to not be a disease, per se, more of an immune disfunction? Thinking back, back... to the writings of what happened on P day, this sort of thing was much more common, but usually resulted in death in hours, and the boy has clearly been infected for longer than that.

The toy gets a smile from the young rat, who reaches for it, trying to grab its flapping cloth lips in his pink fingers.

Shadina frowns. "His body is rejecting the nanites... It's amazing he's still managed to survive this long. We need to eitehr cleanse him of the infection, or flood him with a compatible infection, maybe a weaker one, like Husky or Latex fox. Otherwise, his condition is only going to worsen."

"I'm afraid the medical realm is beyond my scope of knowledge," Dio says, giving a slight bow. "If that's your experienced conclusion and you're willing to carry it out, I'll agree with this diagnosis. I'm a little weary, but I'd hate to see this child suffer any longer."

Makena makes the puppet try to nip at Paulo's little fingers, pulling it back, making little arking noises and such. She holds up her other arm and then has the puppet "walk" down the "stairs" behind it. Having it start a little game of "peekaboo" from behind her arm, jolting up from behind it with an excited expression, hiding back again.

Winter seductively beckon, "More infections? Think that'd help, really?"

Rosetta shakes her head, distraught, "He isn't getting worse, but he isn't getting better," she complains, "Don't you have medicine?"

Paulo is quite delighted playing with the doll, laughing softly when it starts playing peekaboo before squeaking out in Spanish, "You are a crazy fun lady. Do you have a truck?"

Makena giggles, "Hmmmm let me see..." having the little fox go back downstairs, making some shuffling noises as she digs around in her pockets with the puppet.

Shadina sighs. "Nanite compatiblity isn't a 'yes' or 'no' thing. Various nanites can be compatible or not with various people, and the factors involved are very difficult to predict. I think you should go get Dr. Ed for a secodn opinion. Maybe he might have an idea on how to deal with this. The safe thing to do would be to cleanse him of the infection, but I'm not sure we have the equipment for that here. It's not generally how we roll in New Dawn, but the doc would know." She turns to Rosetta. In Spanish, she says "It will be good."

"Alright," Dio exclaims, nodding towards Shadina. "Let's go ahead and take the child to the doctor. I'm afraid I don't come here very often and I'm not quite aware where this doctor is located." Dio looks around to flag the Promethean over. "We should prepare to leave soon."

Winter nods slightly towards Shadina "Yeah, I agree. It's not really something we use but what are our options? Letting the moneygrabbers or warmongerers put their claws into the boy? You know that wouldn't end well. Lets get moving then, if you're sure it's not contagious.."

The group heads off to the doctor, rats and agents all, to see the doctor and get the rats settled into some bunks that are far better than a random shack. Hopefully, they will do well in this new place.
