Story

    • Editor's Scene Look Note**

The scene opens on the basement level of Zephyr Inc, where the living quarters & child care areas would be.  There are plenty of rooms that have been converted into barracks on this floor and is where many Zephyr employees call their home. Next to the barracks is a shop and across from it, just to the right of the stairs, is a small desk for requisitions that reminds with a sign: "Do NOT go into the wastelands without proper gear." Good advice.

Off to the southeastern corner of the room was the Child Care area. Little and not so little tykes play and frolic in and out of the main room. The infection of them and their parents seem to have had a significant affect on the growth of the children. Many seem to be adult size though not necessarily of a human shape. Strange as their appearance may seem, however, their sounds are of merriment and are encouragingly human and warm. A rare light in the darkness of these days.

A quite and comfortable portion of the building, it serves as a hub to both the Cafeteria to the east and the Promethean Studies lab to the west. To the south is the Triage, the infirmary where the wounded are brought to be taken care of and nursed back to health. To the north is a training area for additional Perks that one might gain. Up the stairs is the main Lobby where training can be had, and a quick departure point to elsewhere in the city.

    • Editor's Sandra Look Note**

A mostly human female, if you didn't count the rabbit ears, six breasts, and that cute little white tail that sways behind her. She is wearing a yellow blouse, jean jacket, and a long red skirt. Her feet are clad in sneakers, well worn. She also has a Zephyr Inc badge over her top left breast.

    • /Editor's Sandra Look Note**

Sandra is perched behind her desk, ears alert, but eyes somewhat half lidded with a sort of boredom as her hands move on their own to fill out paperwork. No one ever promised being a secretary would be all fun and games, even at Zephyr. The partially rabbit woman works diligently though.

    • Editor's Magic Look Note**

Magic, a fully mutated, black furred, male Wolf Beast standing at about 5'9", with an athletic build at roughly 180 pounds.  Magic's head hair is jet black, proceeds just past his shoulders with thick knotted dreads, with some strands as thick as a sharpie marker, and with eyes red as crimson.   In regards to a private peek, he has two massive canine shafts vertically arranged, currently sheathed, resting above plum sized balls. He stands almost bare, the only exceptions being a small silver with turquoise stone hand ring is seen hanging out of his left ear as an earring. He is also wearing a simple gold chain necklace around his neck which hangs slightly loose over his neck fur.  He is wearing a dark navy backpack on his back that has some visible wear to it.

    • /Editor's Magic Look Note**

Magic a rather bare Wolf Beast, arrives down the stairs looking about casually as he approaches Sandra at her desk. Upon arriving he notices Sandra's almost tiring gaze as he arrives, "Good morning, I hope I'm not disturbing you. I was wondering if I could talk with you for a bit?"

Sandra looks up and proves she doesn't get out much as her eyes widen a little a moment, "Uh, yes," she says, setting her pen down "I'm sorry, you don't, I mean I don't recognize you." A curious frown comes over her face as an ear spins back, "You know it's odd that you can recognize people with how much they change, but that's besides the point, uh, Mister? I'm Sandra, how can I help?"

Looking down at Sandra as he stands in front of her desk, Magic smiles and says, "We spoke so long ago honestly, and nowadays I don't spend as much time in Zephyr as I did when I first came here, so no worries at all. My name is Magic, I'm actually looking for a friend that I used to know and I was wondering if you could help me find her. You see, she was considered too far gone, and taken away by security from what I last heard and if you happen to know where those cells or confinement areas are, or any information at all it would be of great help to me." Magic looking rather intently at Sandra for her response, as his ears are perked and ready for her reply. He does hope she can provide some news of the lost friend that he has had difficulty finding any news about, and only has regret in not being able to have come looking for her sooner. Having a family and pack can really keep this wolf busy more than he ever imagined.

The pen is raised and worried at by her long front teeth, digging small lines into the plastic as she considers over the request before reaching for a small keyboard. Delicate fingers dance lightly as she glances towards Magic, "Those are the worst ones," she sighs out, "Poor things, sometimes I almost wish they were just free, but that's pretty bad too. What's her name?" she asks.

"Joi. Spelled J-o-i. Although you may not have her name in your database as she couldn't talk, she could write but if they never gave her the chance, they might have never known that she still was capable." Magic replies back and sighs at security having taken her away. Magic considers her words previously with a flick of his ear he then says, "Why are they kept in cages anyway? I was very surprised of hearing of this happening here."

Her ears raise up towards Magic, "Cages? No, padded rooms, yes. They're... insane, in every definition. Dangerous too." she rubs behind her head lightly, "Some of them want to eat people, others just stare at walls, and others want to 'get to know' everyone in the biblical sense. Everyone." A soft sigh takes her shapely form, multiple breasts raising and falling in a wave of flesh, "Joi, Joi..."

Magic blinks at Sandra's response and repeats her words, "Dangerous? How?" He then adds, "Wait a second, you are saying the ones that stare at walls and if I'm reading you correctly on this, have sex like the lost ones outside, are considered dangerous?" Magic raising an eyebrow at the standards, but then again he begins to think if he really should be that surprised especially when how this outbreak started they likely weren't expecting it to last this long by now.

"Joi, ah, is this her?" she asks, turning the monitor to show a Husky female seated awkwardly in a school desk. There appear to be a few other mutants scattered around her, all facing the same direction. A class, perhaps.  Her ears fall, "The ones that stare at walls are dangerous to themselves. They don't eat or bathe, they would wilt away without proper care," she says with a shake of her head, "The, uh, sex addled ones are worse than most of the ones you meet outside, except maybe the huskies. They also tend to have problems taking care of themselves, and will make constant, uh..." she trails, tapping a pen to the desk, "Courtship signals, I think they called it, obsessed with it instead of eating breakfast. The fact that most have no sense of self identity doesn't help either."

Magic blinks and looks at the monitor, examining it closely. "It...yes, it could very well be!" Magic's tail wags slowly at this possible good news he then asks quickly, "Where is she? What happened to her?!" The prospects of her actually being alright finally being more than a hope just then, as he begins to think, 'Maybe, maybe she is alright...' He then blinks and says to Sandra, as he seems almost surprised that Zephyr didn't tell her this yet, "You do know that those infected with the nanites don't need to eat in the hot spot of the city, right?" He seems rather surprised that their analysis didn't come up with this as of yet, or didn't share their findings. His ear gives a flick as he thinks this to himself, still looking at Sandra.

Sandra shakes her head, "What good does that do for the rest?" she asks, "Rotting in a corner or drooling over anyone who sits still long enough? They need... help." she rolls a hand, then sighs softly before she taps at the keyboard lightly, "This one is a model case. She's responding well to a new education technique they're trying, uh, she's out of state though, another facility. Most of her file is off limits, but it says she's doing well." She taps a key, "Most of them don't work out that ideally. We have one that's been here since the start, lost all her marbles. She can dimly recall her old girlfriend, nothing else."

Seeming a bit relieved that Joi was still alive and at least somewhat well, aside from being treated as a lab rat, Magic looks at Sandra and replies, "No offense intended, but how long would it take after putting them in a padded room in here, sticking them with who knows what kind of chemicals or experiments anywhere near a good life anymore? At what point does anyone consider that they might be happier outside, with the lost ones versus a rat experiment? These used to be people like you and me. They might very well still be in there behind all that programming, but..." Magic looks down at the desk as he realizes he's ranting now, and if he doesn't watch himself, he'll say more than he likely should. He looks up at Sandra and then says, "Sorry, I...I've been bothered with how they handled Joi. I would have wanted to have worked with her, she was my responsibility as I saved her off the street and brought her in here. She was a sweet girl..." He looks down again for a moment and then asks about this girl trapped here since the beginning, "Lost all her marbles? Like how bad are we talking here, is she really dangerous? I don't mean having sex either."

She lifts her shoulders a little helplessly, "They aren't? I don't know, I'm not a doctor. I wasn't even a secretary before this all started, so I'm just getting used to the job. She's not rated as dangerous, just autistic, which is what she's being treated for." she taps a few more keys and brings up a darkened room, "This one is a much sadder case. I keep an eye on her, out of..." she falters, searching for the word, "Well she's a rabbit. But she's gone, empty up here," she points up, "Nothing but a desire to pass on these crazy chocolate eggs, not like the yolk ones the rabbits in the forest make."

Magic admits, "I'm not a doctor either, but how can anyone be happy in any kind of hospital setting for over a year now, if she has been with us since the beginning." Magic listens to the description and says, "Have they tried speaking rabbit to her?" Magic asks in seriousness and then blinks as he realizes he isn't talking to a fellow family member he adds, "Oh, I mean to say have they tried talking to the beast on the beasts level? They are treating it as a human condition, which if she is as far gone as it sounds like, she isn't as human as she used to be, she's likely more beast with human memories now. Which is a sad thing, but if she isn't dangerous, why keep her locked away? What's so different about her eggs too?" Magic's attention a bit more focused as he doesn't like the sound of this poor girl having been locked away for over a year now.

She shakes her head quickly, "Well, I don't know, she doesn't make squeaking sounds," she offers in an unsure tone, "She can talk, about how delicious her eggs are and you should eat them, but that's most of her conversation range at the moment," she rubs her nose lightly before reaching for the skies, stretching out, "It's a damn shame though, her girlfriend, uh, boyfriend now, left state, only comes to visit on the holidays."

Magic raises a brow, "Her girlfriend...wait, was she always a she?" Magic trying to piece together everything, he adds, "What is this bunny girl's name anyway? Moreover, I take it you shouldn't eat the eggs if that's what she wants you to do?"

"Mike," she says, running a finger across the keyboard until it lands on a F key and it brings up the image of a fairly typical college youth, male, "Subject zero of a strain that never got off the ground. He locked himself with his girlfriend in a bunker and that's where we found them. They were both completely infected. The girlfriend responded to treatment, he didn't." She explains, reading the text off the monitor, "The doctors say it's," she squints, "I can't pronounce this stuff. The strain causes you to become both male and female in big ways at first, but over time you lose half of it, and end up on the other side of the gender fence."

"Mike huh? I guess it doesn't sound like they made any further progress with Mike this whole time. What is his girlfriends name at the time and her current name?" Magic thinking then asks again, "Is Mike dangerous?"

She shakes her head, "I can't say that. Privacy issues," she says, waving her pen at Magic, "You wouldn't want me spilling your beans, now would you?" she asks, "In fact, I'm pretty sure I've already said way too much." she sighs out, "Depends on your definition of danger. She certainly doesn't take care of herself."

Magic looks at Sandra with a casual honesty, "I wouldn't mind if it meant getting me out of a padded room." Magic testing her response as he's already formulating a plan in his mind for Mike. He then says, "So she wouldn't attack people, but probably want to have sex with anything compatible?"

Sandra shakes her head, "Well, two priorities, uh..." she looks uncomfortable, "Passing her eggs on, and failing that, the sex thing. It wouldn't be any better for her outside of that room, she'd still be an empty shell." she leans forward, resting her chin on her palms, "It's sad."

Magic frowns and says, "I see...Sandra, if I told a sweet caring bunny something, could you keep it a secret?" He looks around cautiously and comes around to the other side of the desk near Sandra as he talks, then gets on his knees beside her. He almost looks like he is about to propose for her considering how careful he is being in his movements.

Her cheeks redden a little as more of Magic comes into obvious view, "I'm a taken girl," she reminds, ears twitching lightly, "But, yes, just you and me, sure," she allows, glancing about nervously suddenly.

Leaning closer, Magic smirks and says gently, "No, no, but..." He looks about then whispers to Sandra "I was prepared to take Joi out of here if I had to, and after hearing about Mike. I want to try to help Mike, I don't know if I can bring him completely back but...Zephyr has had a year, and I don't know about you but sitting in a padded room for a year how is that helpful to anyone's psyche? I admit it might end up with him leaving even me, but...I want to try. I've been dealing with the beasts that these infections bring out in us for some time, and I want to see how far gone Mike really is. If he chooses to come with me, I want to take him with me. But I would obviously need some help..." Magic looks at her with hopeful eyes having finished his whispered speech, taking care to only be audible just for her as he looks about cautiously.

Her ears go up, then down a little, then slowly raise again as a thought emerges in her eyes, "This may sound a little crazy," she says, "But this is the sort of thing the higher ups might... approve." she smiles gently, "An outreach kind of thing? You, uh, spin it like PR, gets their attention," she suggests, "You're one of those... I thought they wore glowy hats?"

Magic rather surprised at this prospect, he blinks then says softly, "If you mean part of the Prometheans...I am an ally with them, yes. We try working with the beasts, not against them and locking them away in rooms for another. I never did like the glow hats idea, I can wave just fine and announce I'm not going to hump someone from far away without being a lighthouse." Magic obviously showing he doesn't see completely eye to eye with the Prometheans, aside from the fact that he's rather naked too which would go against "code" if Sandra knew more about them.

She shrugs then, "Not my business, I'm a Zephyr girl," she says, placing a hand on her upperleftmost breast, "But we can still work it that way, a trial release to Promethean custody, make a promotion out of it, Zephyr cooperation for a brighter tomorrow, etc?" she says, trying to paint an image with her words, "I think they'd gobble it up if we put it right."

Magic looks at her almost pledge to Zephyr, and he can't help but smile at her dedication, even though he may not agree with it. He then asks in disbelief, "You really think they would go for it? I mean technically I'm not from the Promethean village, but I do have access, trade, and talk with them. Like I said, I'm an ally for them and we get along fine...but, trial release? I don't want Mike to come back here in a padded room." Magic's ears droop at this idea of Mike being locked away for the rest of his life.

Sandra snorts, "Then you'd better do what you say you will. If he's reformed, then there's no padded room for him to come back to," she advises, "And if I were you, I'd stop insisting how much you're not related to them and go get them involved," she makes a soft shooing motion, "You come back with their approval and I'm pretty confident I can have Mike in your hands with some time to bring them around."

Magic stands up and says, "Alright, if you really think it would make a difference, I'll try it your way, but still consider my option if all this goes south, please?" Magic then adds, "I'll try to request a meeting with the village leader, and I better go find a pair of pants." He sighs, obviously not liking the idea of playing dress up, but knowing he better play along as Sandra seems to really think her idea will work and she has been with Zephyr for quite awhile now. He looks at Sandra and says, "Thanks again Sandra, you've been an awesome help to me."

She flashes a brilliant smile, human with a bucked tooth display at the front, "Any time hon, you just come back with their word and I'll handle my side of things." Her smile dims a little, "Just, you know, get her around? I don't want her to be a sexy vegetable for the rest of her days."

Giving a smile as Magic replies back, "I'll do what what I can." He then nods knowingly and says, "I don't want that either, and nor do I want her rotting away in here. Mike didn't ask for any of this, we all didn't." He looks down at her table again in thought, thinking again to Joi and the others he has come across. He then says, "I better get to it then! Cya Sandra!" He waves to her and starts to make his way out, straight home for a pit stop to pickup his jeans and then head straight over to the Promethean Village.

As Magic approaches the Roundhouse building of New Dawn, there is a huge building made of wooden struts thatched on the outside, with a huge pole of wood in the centre. In the north east quadrant is some training equipment, designed to help people deal with the problems and perks of being a mutant. In the north west sits a rat behind a counter, piles of very odd equipment scattered around him. In the south west is one of the nanite programming systems like you saw back in zephyr, powered by nothing you can see.

And so, a quick jaunt to home, then across the city, Magic finds himself wandering up into the town of New Dawn. Audience with Her Most Bright is out of the question, but there are town captains about. One, a human/panther taur, is willing to talk. Panther from the hips down, human male from there up. "Your group has not been very diligent in your duties or reports," he starts things, "But I always have time for a brother. What brings you to me?"

Scratching behind his head amongst his dreads, Magic admits, "Yeah, paperwork hasn't been my strong point Captain, sorry about that." He perks his ears and replies, "Oh, well, I did some research over at Zephyr, in search of a girl that I know of that was taken and locked away in Zephyr's confinement areas. I found out she was transferred to another facility and otherwise doing okay, but as I talked with secretary she admitted of another who they have not been able to help for over a year. I proposed that I wanted to try to help her, and she recognized me being associated with the Prometheans as I spoke of beasts no doubt. But the problem is she wants to provide "Mike" the now bunny girl in their custody on a trial basis, and as a promotional gesture of 'good will' with the village. In other words, she wants the village approval behind this "trial" arrangement being proposed." Magic sighs not really liking the idea of letting politics enter this, but this isn't quite a new concept in how things can get overly complicated. Magic thinks to himself that if worst indeed comes to worst, he'll try to bail Mike out himself if he has to.

He holds up a hand, "You may want to take a breath between your words," he advises, "If I heard most of that right, you want to get someone out of Zephyr?" he asks, "And they're ok with it?" he lifts his shoulders, "What's the catch? They want money?"

Magic nods and replies, "Sorry about that, didn't want to waste your time is all..." He perks his ears and nods, "She isn't the final person who would propose the final deal of course, but as of right now, she thinks they'll go for a public relations outreach to send a gesture of good will, no money mentioned as of yet, and only catch I can see is it would be a trial."

He rubs his chin thoughtfully, "It couldn't hurt, unless we do as badly as they did, then they can point and laugh at our ways while taking the moral high ground," He stomps a paw on the ground, claws digging through the dirt, "They would love the chance."

Magic earfolds as he hears of this possibility at not being too far past them, but then adds, "They had a year with Mike and zip as far as I can tell. I think personally they already look like they are out of options."

"I agree, but can you do it? I have heard no tales of your success with the new recruits. Of course, how could I? You're never in the town to help with that." he says in a somewhat chastising tone.

Ears still folding, Magic knew this might come up and admits, "I live outside Captain, you know that...and I have a family out there. It's not easy balancing a large family that keeps growing from both new pups and new additions of people needing help we come across, but I will work on those reports. Our family has had successes with many skunks and new types from around Zephyr as we aren't too far from there, and we helped a fellow cat who was about to lose it one time being nearly lost." Magic decides not to expound too much as he already chewed off the Captain's ear before.

The captain reaches to pat Magic's shoulder, "It would be easier if you had faith in your kin. We take care of our children together, here, and raise them well. We are a community, a family. Will you at least consider coming home?" he asks, "You and your family would be welcome within our walls."

Magic smiles and says, "I know we would be Captain, it's just that we're hoping to not have to be in a gated community. Granted we have security, but...we're trying to provide more of a counter than what Zephyr is offering. Did you happen to hear about the department store we opened up?"

"Who has not heard of it?" he asks, then sighs, "She teaches us to have faith in our brothers and sisters. Go and lay claim to the lost one, guide them to the light." he says, squeezing that shoulder lightly, "Show us you are a flame bearer."

Magic puts his hand on top of the Captain's hand resting on his shoulder with a smile. "I will Captain! Can you give me the papers I would need to make this official?"

He nods and steps back, moving to fetch a crudely shaven pencil and starts to scribbling, "I will tell them that you will accept this child into your care under our approval." he says, though clearly writing more than just that. He folds the paper in half and holds it out.

Magic takes the paper with a smile and says, "Thank you Captain, and fellow brother. I will do my best to help our new sister, Mike." He then puts the paper in his backpack and heads out immediately to Zephyr to tell Sandra the great news.
